Game Recap 6/1/18

STOMPERS GET TO BULLPEN AS CLIPPERS GO DOWN IN SLUGFEST, 12-9
MARTINEZ, Calif. -- A strong start for the Clippers tonight belied a night of bullpen woes, as
Martinez fell to Sonoma for the second game straight - at the hands of no less than 4 Stompers
home runs, which quickly negated an early 7-1 Clippers lead. Daniel Comstock (2-5, RBI) homered for the 3rd time in 3 consecutive plate appearances in Sonoma’s half of the second. That run was the only blemish on Connor Kelly’s (0-0, 2.45 ERA) record until the 4th, when Kelly had two on with two out and induced a ground ball off the bat of Marcus Bradley (1-3) that was booted by Luis Perez at second. Kelly then walked four in a row to drive in four, posting a WHIP of 2.73 after going 3 2/3 innings and giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits.

The Clippers held a lead of 7-1 heading into that 4th inning, and still led 7-5 heading into the
bottom of the 4th, but would only score 2 more runs in the last two-thirds of the ballgame. Vinny
Valentino (0-1, 81.00 ERA), in his Clippers debut, would enter the game in the 6th only to give
up 6 runs on 6 hits, and the Stompers would take a 4-run lead which they wouldn’t relinquish.
Bullpen issues here tonight overshadowed the Clippers’ offensive accomplishments - four
Clippers got their first hits of the season, including Will Decker, who kicked things off with
back-to-back RBI doubles in the 1st and 2nd. Trey Hunt continued hitting well, going 2-3 with a
couple of runs scored - but the real story is Zach Compton, who redeemed himself after going 0
for 4 and committing two errors last night. Compton drilled a two-run shot to left on an 0-1 pitch
to give the Clippers the lead, and finished 2-4 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.

Martinez looks to continue its hot streak at the plate against Vallejo, who visit Waterfront Park
on Saturday and Sunday for a two-game set. The Admirals come to town at 2-0, sitting atop the
Pacific Association standings, as the Clippers look to find their first win in franchise history this
weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and for 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon - gates open an hour before first pitch. Coverage on MTZClippers.com and on the Mixlr Live App begins 15 minutes before gametime with the Clippers pregame show - follow along on Twitter or with Live Stats.
